PATHOGENS
- Haemophilus influenzae (serotype b)
- Less commonly, other pathogens implicated:
- Respiratory tract viruses
- COVID has now been described
- Immunocompromised hosts (only):
- Candida albicans
- Kaposi’s sarcoma
- Gram-negative bacilli
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Aspergillus
- Pathogens are often not detected by customary clinical testing.
