PATHOGENS

Haemophilus influenzae (serotype b)
Less commonly, other pathogens implicated:
- S. pneumoniae
- Other Streptococcus species
Respiratory tract viruses
- COVID has now been described
Immunocompromised hosts (only):
- Candida albicans
- Kaposi’s sarcoma
- Gram-negative bacilli
- Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Aspergillus
Pathogens are often not detected by customary clinical testing.
