PATHOGENS
- Gram negative pathogens:
- Escherichia coli (majority of cases)
- Other Enterobacteriaceae
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Gram-positive pathogens:
- Enterococcus species
- Other Gram-positive organisms, including Staphylococcus species (including S. aureus) and Streptococcus species
- Sexually transmitted pathogens: C. trachomatis and other atypical pathogens (e.g., U. urealyticum) have been implicated
- Others (very rare): TB, fungi (histoplasmosis, cryptococcus), and viruses
