Appendicitis
PATHOGENS
- Anticipate polymicrobial gastrointestinal flora:
- Enterobacterales (e.g. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., and Enterobacter spp.)
- Anaerobes (e.g., Bacteroides spp.)
- Gram-positive cocci (e.g., Enterococcus spp, Streptococcus spp.)
- Fungi: (e.g., Candida spp) are less common
- In community-acquired infections, the major pathogens are Enterobacterales and anaerobes.
- In healthcare-associated infections or recent broad-spectrum antibiotic exposure, yeast, enterococci, resistant Gram-negative organisms, and Staphylococcus aureus may be seen.
