  • Anticipate polymicrobial gastrointestinal flora:
    • Enterobacterales (e.g. Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp., and Enterobacter spp.)
    • Anaerobes (e.g., Bacteroides spp.)
    • Gram-positive cocci (e.g., Enterococcus spp, Streptococcus spp.)
  • Fungi: (e.g., Candida spp) are less common
  • In community-acquired infections, the major pathogens are Enterobacterales and anaerobes.
  • In healthcare-associated infections or recent broad-spectrum antibiotic exposure, yeast, enterococci, resistant Gram-negative organisms, and Staphylococcus aureus may be seen.
