MICROBIOLOGY

  • Member of Enterobacteriaceae.
    • Motile, Gram-negative, facultative aerobic rod.
      • Non-lactose fermenter
      • Growth on plates (sheep’s blood, MacConkey) often yields a fruity smell.
    • Same tribe as Proteus and Morganella spp.
  • Typical constituents of normal GI flora in humans and animals; also found in soil, water and sewage.
  • Five common species implicated in causing human infection: P. alcalifaciens, P. heimbachae, P. rettgeri, P. rustigianii, and P. stuartii (most common).
    • Many isolates display resistance to numerous antibiotics.
