Providencia
MICROBIOLOGY
- Member of Enterobacteriaceae.
- Motile, Gram-negative, facultative aerobic rod.
- Non-lactose fermenter
- Growth on plates (sheep’s blood, MacConkey) often yields a fruity smell.
- Same tribe as Proteus and Morganella spp.
- Motile, Gram-negative, facultative aerobic rod.
- Typical constituents of normal GI flora in humans and animals; also found in soil, water and sewage.
- Five common species implicated in causing human infection: P. alcalifaciens, P. heimbachae, P. rettgeri, P. rustigianii, and P. stuartii (most common).
- Many isolates display resistance to numerous antibiotics.
