- Giardia lamblia
- Entamoeba histolytica
- Clostridium difficile
- Campylobacter jejuni
- Salmonella species
- Shigella species
- Enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC): also known as Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC)
- Other pathogenic Escherichia coli: enterotoxigenic, enteropathogenic, enteroinvasive, and enteroaggregative
- Other infectious causes include Aeromonas species, Plesiomonas species, Cryptosporidium parvum, Microsporidia, Yersinia species, Vibrio species, Bacteroides fragilis, Clostridium perfringens, Rotavirus, Norovirus/Calicivirus, Enteric adenovirus, Astrovirus, small round viruses, Coronavirus, Herpes simplex virus, and Cytomegalovirus, Cyclospora cayetanensis, Isospora belli, Mycobacterium avium complex and Strongyloides stercoralis.
- Unusual Causes: Neiserria gonorrhea, Treponema pallidum, Chlamydia trachomatis (Including LGV serovars), and Tropheryma whipplei
