MICROBIOLOGY

  • C.psittaci may appear as Gram-negative, spherical (0.4-0.6 microns in diameter, Fig 1), intracellular bacteria.
    • Previously called, Chlamydia psittaci, now termed Chlamydophila psittaci.
  • Agent of endemic avian chlamydiosis and epizootic outbreaks in mammals.
  • Typical epidemiology: birds excrete infectious organisms in discharge from eyes, beaks, and excrement.
