Lyme Disease

PATHOGENS

  • Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, agent of Lyme disease (LD) in North America and Eurasia.
    • In North America, the agent is B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, the sole infection case.
  • Other genospecies may also cause LD in regions outside the U.S., e.g., B. garinii, B. afzelii and B. bavariensis in Europe.
    • These species may not trigger positive U.S. 2-tier Lyme serologic assays but are better detected by testing that includes Lyme C6 or Vlse antigen antibody testing as part of its testing.
