MICROBIOLOGY

  • Free-living ameba, ubiquitous in the environment, is found in warm freshwater and soil. Rarely found in inadequately chlorinated tap water or swimming pools.
  • Phylum Percolozoa
    • Organisms feed on bacteria.
    • N. fowleri is the only known species to cause human disease.
      • Other free-living amoebae Naegleria are not considered pathogenic.
