Mycobacterium chelonae

MICROBIOLOGY

  • Rapidly-growing, hardy, ubiquitous mycobacterium commonly found in the environment, including municipal tap water.
  • Results of in vitro drug susceptibility tests should be used to guide antimicrobial therapy (though susceptibility is unpredictable).
  • Lab should differentiate from M. abscessus with which it can be confused since this organism is more difficult to treat.
