Molluscum contagiosum


  • Molluscum contagiosum virus (MCV): large, brick- or ovoid-shaped double-stranded DNA pox virus [Fig 1], genus Molluscipox, family Poxviridae.
    • Two subtypes cause indistinguishable lesions.
      • MCV I
      • MCV II
  • Viral particles are contained in the central core of umbilicated lesions.
  • The virus replicates in the dermis.
