  • Typical pathogens of concern:
    • Oral flora: for example, Streptococcus viridans group is the usual concern re: dental prophylaxis for endocarditis.
    • S. aureus: This is an occasional, preventable cause if the procedure is in a high-risk patient with active staphylococcal infection.
