MICROBIOLOGY

  • 3 subsets of C. trachomatis (CT):
  1. D-K biovars: genital tract chlamydia, worldwide STD-causing cervicitis, urethritis, PID, epididymitis
  2. L serovars: lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV)
  3. A-C biovars: trachoma (ocular)
  • Now rarely performed for clinical care, laboratory culture requires tissue culture to demonstrate intracellular inclusion bodies [Fig 1].
