Chikungunya vaccine

VACCINE TYPE

There are two chikungunya vaccines available in the U.S.:

  • A live-attenuated vaccine (IXCHIQ®) was generated from the La Réunion chikungunya virus (CHIKV) strain and propagated from Vero cells.
    • Available for adults 18 years of age and older*
  • A virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine (VIMKUNYA™) that contains purified VLPs consisting of CHIKV capsid protein (C) and envelope proteins E1 and E2, derived from the CHIKV Senegal strain 37997
    • Available for individuals 12 years of age and older
