  • In the era of widespread pneumococcal vaccination, the most common bacteria implicated in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children are:
    • Streptococcus pneumoniae
    • Nontypable Haemophilus influenzae
    • Moraxella catarrhalis
  • Pathogens occasionally involved in CAP are:
    • Streptococcus pyogenes
    • Staphylococcus aureus
    • Mycoplasma pneumoniae
  • Viral pathogens remain more common than bacterial pathogens as causes of lower respiratory tract infections in young children.[5]
