Mycobacterium chimaera

MICROBIOLOGY

Slow-growing, non-pigmented member of Mycobacterium avium complex.
- Named in 2004 as M. chimaera due to its genetic mix of MAI strains.
- Requires 2-6 weeks for culture growth.
- Identification can be problematic.
Similar to M. avium, found in household water supplies and other water-related biofilms.
