- Poliovirus: part of the enterovirus group, Picornaviridae (positive-sense) RNA virus family.
- Three poliovirus serotypes: P1 (Mahoney), P2 (MEF-1), and P3 (Saukett).
- Wild poliovirus type 3 is believed to be eradicated. The last known isolation was in 2012 in Nigeria.
- Humans are only natural host.
