  • Mycetoma is a nonspecific term describing a chronic infectious process caused by bacteria (actinomycetoma) or fungi (eumycetoma).
    • Eumycetoma: caused by various fungi, most commonly Madurella spp., including dematiaceous fungi.
    • Actinomycetoma: caused by Gram-positive, filamentous higher bacteria (Actinomyces spp., Nocardia spp.); important to distinguish by culture from eumycetoma to direct appropriate therapy.
