  • Common pathogens:
    • S. aureus: especially MRSA
    • P. aeruginosa: associated with whirlpools, hot tubs, heated swimming pool exposures
    • Pityrosporum: HIV-associated
  • Less common pathogens:
    • Coliforms: e.g., Klebsiella, Proteus spp., etc
    • Demodex folliculorum: face mite, mostly HIV-associated
    • HSV
    • Trichophyton
    • Malassezia
      • Causes truncal folliculitis.
  • Also, non-infectious inflammatory folliculitis in HIV: eosinophilic folliculitis
