  • Small, obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacillus [Fig 1]
    • Infects mononuclear cells predominantly, plus others.
  • Excreted from feces, urine, and milk of infected animals.
  • Organisms are hardy and can survive in the environment by resisting heat, desiccation, and often disinfectants.
