MICROBIOLOGY

Small, obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacillus [Fig 1]
- Infects mononuclear cells predominantly, plus others.
Excreted from feces, urine, and milk of infected animals.
Organisms are hardy and can survive in the environment by resisting heat, desiccation, and often disinfectants.
